Following last week’s fire-breathing massacre of the Lannister army, it made perfect sense that HBO’s US:TWX “Game of Thrones” took the contrasting approach at the conclusion of tonight’s episode, “Eastwatch”: So much so that it left a serious chill up viewers’ spines.

In an attempt to convince Cersei Lannister once and for all that there is a far greater enemy facing the still-warring Westeros monarchs – thy name is White Walker – Jon Snow is now leading a small band of men into the frozen wasteland beyond the Wall. Their mission is to capture a White Walker and bring it to King’s Landing as unequivocal proof that these killers are more problematic foes than dragons and narcissistic queens.
So “Game of Thrones” managed to keep Jaime Lannister alive for one more episode this week, but now the question is, are we poised to lose a large portion of the male cast as they head into such familiar, yet dangerous territory? Joining a really-scared-looking Jon in this treacherous mission is Ser Jorah Mormont (newly returned to his queen, Daenerys Targaryen), the Wildling Tormund Giantsbane, Beric Dondarrion, the Hound – and blast from season 3’s past, Robert Baratheon’s bastard son, the blacksmith Gendry.
The episode may have ended on a rather cold note, but there were plenty of other fire-and-ice-themed developments that caught our eye tonight in “Eastwatch.” Read on for our biggest takeaways from this week’s episode:
Gilly knows about R+L=J!
In one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it lines of dialogue, Gilly begins reading to Samwell Tarly from High Septon Maynard’s documents. She comes across a passage that discusses how “Prince Rhaegar” was issued an annulment and then secretly married to another, unnamed woman. (This is also important because now it seems Jon isn’t a bastard at all.) Unfortunately for Sam, whose insights about the White Walkers continue to be dismissed by Archmaester Merwyn, is too frustrated to listen to Gilly’s big reveal. We just have to hope that wherever these two land next – Sam, along with his little family, ditched the Citadel this episode, ostensibly for Winterfell, because he’s tired of being a drudge and he cured greyscale for heaven’s sake! – Gilly will speak up about what she’s learned. Because I’m not holding out hope that Bran is going to bother telling Jon the truth if/when the King in the North comes home. This kid is way too wrapped up in himself to bother acknowledging others at this point.

Blood or not, there is some serious smoldering going on between Jon and Dany
She may technically be his aunt, but since she doesn’t know that, there was nothing stopping Daenerys from giving her new ally, Jon, some major moony eyes in “Eastwatch,” building on their apparent chemistry from last week. Plus, when a triumphant Dany returned to Dragonstone atop Drogon, one cannot ignore how Jon was able to so easily bond with the dragon, stroking its cheek and such. It’s likely he was so comfortable with the fiery beast because he is a Targaryen – but it could also symbolize their potential pairing. I’m just curious to find out if Jon is ever going to tell Dany about how he died once…because she totally suspects that he did. Maybe wait until the third date for that one.
Littlefinger is up to no good (surprise!) when it comes to Sansa and Arya
The talented assassin and shifty Winterfell adviser have been eyeing each other with suspicion since last week’s episode, and tonight we witnessed the first stages of Littlefinger’s nefarious plan to mess with the Stark sisters. He planted an old – we’re talking season 1 old – Sansa-written raven scroll for Arya to find, which, in all likelihood will cause her to view her sister with even more doubt than before. Basically Littlefinger wants Arya to think Sansa was always loyal to Joffrey and the Lannisters. Sure, Arya may not know that Sansa was forced to write such a note at the time, but this feels like a rookie move on Littlefinger’s part. Arya’s too smart to fall for something like this…right?

Gendry’s comeback can’t be just because they needed an extra pair of hands at the Wall
As previously mentioned, “Eastwatch” saw the return of a character who hasn’t been seen since season 3: Robert Baratheon’s bastard son, Gendry. For now, the blacksmith – rediscovered by Ser Davos in King’s Landing – is just part of Jon Snow’s army heading beyond the Wall. But there’s always a reason why a long-lost character comes back, and while Gendry and Jon seemed to bond over their bastard lineage, who’s to say that the only living Baratheon heir won’t make a play for the Iron Throne himself?
