HBO was recently hacked and the script of the upcoming episodes Game of Thrones has been leaked by hackers.

Winter has come for HBO as the channel was reportedly hacked and a few scripts of its most popular shows including Game of Thrones have been leaked online. The show, that recently aired the third episode, was targeted by cyber attackers, HBO confirmed.

Releasing a statement, the channel shared 'HBO recently experienced a cyber incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information. We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cyber security firms. Data protection is a top priority at HBO, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the data we hold,' Entertainment Weekly reported.

While the channel has refused to reveal what content might have been stolen, EW reports that the hacker claims to have access to written material that's allegedly from next week's fourth episode of Game of Thrones.

Not only have the hackers gained access to the George RR Martin series, they also have reportedly obtained 1.5 terabytes of data from the company. The data includes upcoming episode of Ballers and Room 104.

The company became aware of the hack when an anonymous email was sent to many reporters which read: 'Hi to all mankind. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. What's its name? Oh I forget to tell. Its HBO and Game of Thrones......!!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it & spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. HBO is falling.'

HBO was quick to take steps towards the situation and sent an internal memo informing employees of the breach.

'Any intrusion of this nature is obviously disruptive, unsettling, and disturbing for all of us. I can assure you that senior leadership and our extraordinary technology team, along with outside experts, are working round the clock to protect our collective interests. The efforts across multiple departments have been nothing short of herculean,' a memo signed by HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler read.

While the hackers have claimed to have access to the episodes, they haven't leaked an episode online as of yet.

The Washington Post notes that with the release of Game of Thrones season 7, the show has become the highest-rated cable program. About 12.7 million tuned in to watch the season 7 premiere episode on HBO whereas another 6 million watched on streaming platforms like HBO Go.

If the episodes do leak online, they will cause huge losses for the channel and the makers involved.

HBO's network suffered a disruptive, unsettling, and disturbing cyber attack earlier this week. Although 1.5 terabytes of data was reportedly stolen by miscreants, in the aftermath, it was the theft of an upcoming Game of Thrones script that led to what may be called wide-spread chaos and mayhem, with HBO running for cover. Now it seems, the hack might just have led to a new episode of the Game of Thrones TV series leaking online adding to HBO's woes.

Update: The Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 4 has been now officially aired on HBO in the US, and on Hotstar in India. The interesting bit is that the leaked episode from Friday night has turned out to be the real deal. It was the actual, full episode 4 that leaked on Friday on Reddit through the Google Drive, and later through video streaming sites and torrents. Although the quality was low, the leaked episode 4 matches the actual one minute-by-minute. Now, some people are threatening to leak the episode 5, although almost everything about that episode is also already known.

Update: It seems the leaked episode didn't come from the HBO hack after all. The Verge reports that HBO's distribution partner in India, aka Star India is in fact the source of the episode making its way online ahead of TV broadcast. It is being reported that the company's logo appears watermarked throughout the leaked episode. This means the leak comes courtesy Hotstar, and has little to do with the HBO network hacking incidence.

Episode 4 of season 7 appears to have leaked online a couple of days before it goes live on TV and streaming services like Hotstar. Although the video quality of the episode that has been leaked is said to be questionable - it's said to be of low-quality - that surely hasn't stopped people from downloading and watching it. The temptation of an unadulterated early access to an unreleased Game of Thrones episode is quite hard to resist, after all. Reports also suggest that the episode in question may not be the final edited cut, but, that doesn't really matter now, does it?

The episode has now made its way on to Reddit where people are downloading it, watching it, and commenting on it, without giving a second thought. The number of downloads, in fact, had reached their limit at the time of writing this piece.
